With reference to a recent post from i_am_marky apparently with his Rocksoc president hat on, I quote from the constitution: "The Society exists to bring together people interested in live and recorded rock music". This includes running club nights, running gigs, and sitting in pubs arguing about the relative merits of AFI and Ackercocke; this does not include insulting current and potential members who couldn't make it out on one particular Saturday night.
Last I heard, Rocksoc does not have a policy of "with us or against us", and even if it did, telling people they suck is not good marketing.
I know it's frustrating when you try to organise things and nobody goes. I know it's frustrating being held responsible for anything and everything (I tried to resign, twice) and I know it's tiring running a society (not that the president should ever have to do so single-handedly, but it sometimes feels like it).
But can you please not undermine your own and everyone else's efforts by driving the people you've tried so hard to attract away again?
-smcv (who enjoyed the gig, and will be looking out for My Name Is Calla's EP, but nearly didn't make it there himself)

Combichrist - Blut Royale (which is not one of the answers) |
] |
This was going to be a round I contributed to the Rocksoc Christmas Quiz, but we didn't have time to use it, so I thought I'd put it here...
It's the same format as naranek's lyrics quiz, except it goes "bleep" less. The questions consist of a line or two from a song. Post your answers in a screened comment - you get one point per correct artist, one point per correct song title, and one point for posting the next line of the song. Using Google is considered cheating.
Whoever has most points wins a Mars bar, probably to be awarded at Wake Up Screaming. The deadline is next Sunday night.
1. You can't see the forest / for the trees
2. Am I just too stupid to realise?
3. The sacrifice was much too high
4. Dig through the ditches
5. Gefärlich ist wer Schmerzen kennt (English: Whoever knows pain is dangerous)
6. This is the noise that keeps me awake
7. Every day I feel anonymous hate
8. Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
9. I need to know / Why did you choose to betray me?
10. Awaiting the hour of reprisal

From memory, so the order is almost certainly wrong and a few of the song titles might be too.
Lots of requests, because I was doing my best to fill the dancefloor and most of the requests made seemed to fit in well enough with what I was planning to play anyway.

In response to the increasing number of Ubuntu derivatives, particularly the Christian one, someone on ubuntu-users wondered when Cthubuntu would be available. #debian-uk liked the idea:
13:41 < fledermaus> Ia, cthubuntu ftaghn. 13:41 < smcv> fledermaus: like ubuntu christian edition, but better? 13:42 < fledermaus> it'll be ready "when the stars are right" 13:46 < rjek> Hmm! cthubuntu tenticle rape. 13:47 < fledermaus> the "cyclopean squid" release 13:47 < smcv> the logo is 3 robed cultists holding hands in a circle, right? 13:48 < smcv> fledermaus: nah, the squamous squid 13:48 * rjek grins. 13:48 < fledermaus> squamous works. 13:49 < smcv> the next version is "the eldritch entity" 13:50 < fledermaus> followed by the "batrachian beast" 13:53 < rjek> Right. What do we have to do to set up a dirivitive of Ubuntu? :)
so I tried some Photoshopping:

I haven't seen the sequel yet and I suspect I'm not the only one. Vue, Wednesday evening to take advantage of Orange two-for-price-of-one-ness? It's on at 1930 and 2030 - the latter sounds more likely.
Comment or email smcv-livejournal pseudorandom co uk if interested.

[11 Jul 2006|10:05am] |
You should all come to Wake Up Screaming! oedipamaas49, myself, wibble_fish and i_am_marky will be DJing, so it's possible that this will be about the most accessible WUS EVAR. There will be both rock and metal (if nothing else, I'll ensure this by playing some of each). We also intend to play some Rome Burns and Fire&Forget at some point to promote the gig tomorrow.
i_am_marky is going to bring a clipboard-on-a-string for requests (the same arrangement The Calling usually has), so, requests very welcome.

This is a Picnic Meme. There will be an LJ picnic on Jesus Green, Cambridge, UK on Sunday the 14th of May, from around 2pm. We'll meet toward the town end of Jesus Green, by Lower Park Street. Nobody is organising this; it'll just happen. Please turn up, be sensible, bring food and drink, meet new people, have fun.

I took some photos at the latest Rocksoc gig: Belisha, Disarm, 20Story.
20Story were very good (particularly since it was their first gig, and the first time two of them had played live in any band), and Disarm and Belisha were superb.

| Do any of you know someone trying to rent out a room in Cambridge? |
[07 May 2005|10:42pm] |
I live too far away from Cambridge, and I'm finally trying to do something about it. Went to look at a potential room today: the house seemed nice, the people seemed nice, but unfortunately the room is rather tiny. Oh well, it's something to consider. The guy showing me round said it was a buyer's (renter's?) market at this time of year, which is encouraging.
Obviously, I'd much prefer living with like-minded people, so if any of you know someone who's trying to rent out a room in north/east/central Cambridge (or people in a shared house trying to fill one more room) and is friendly towards geeks and rock/metal/goth types, please let me know!
It was nice to finally make it to a Gothsoc pubmeet yesterday. Sadly, having an hour of cycling ahead of me, I went home rather than going to the Kambar. To be honest, that sort of thing is a large part of why I want to move :-)
